ED'S OUTDOOR PAGES March 19, 2005: Hike to Sterling Pond & Watson Camp - Ice Climbers on the Notch Cliffs Page 2 ( Sterling Page 1) |
This seemed to be a good day for ice climbing on the famous cliffs of Smugglers Notch. We met a number of climbers with their gear on the way to the popular spots, saw many well-trodden paths in the snow up the steep cliff-sides, and spotted a few high up the cliffs. |

Climber #1 was climbing solo (crazy). Wide-angle image at left, indicated by arrow; zoom at right. | Climber #2, also climbing solo, in what seemed a more precarious position. He did not move for the several minutes we watched. |
